Shielding gas, welding gas

Depending on the melting behavior of the electrode from which the arc burns to the workpiece, a distinction is made between two main groups of gas-shielded welding processes:

  • Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) - melting metal wire electrode
  • Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) - non-consumable tungsten electrode

Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) includes

  • active gas metal arc welding (MAG) and
  • metal inert gas welding (MIG).

Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) includes

  • tungsten inert gas welding (TIG) and
  • plasma welding (WP).

Arnold uses gas-shielded arc welding in all common welding processes.
