A new pulse for space travel

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has entrusted the up-and-coming artist Johannes Leidenberger from Düsseldorf with a fascinating project. His aluminum sculpture "Puls" will adorn the board and main administration building in Cologne. Leidenberger's impressive design came out on top against five other participants in an art and construction competition.

The virtuosity of manual sheet metal forming

The realization of this extraordinary work placed high demands on structural feasibility, planning and production due to its special shape. The sculpture embodies the art of manual sheet metal forming, in which aluminum sheets were formed by hand. Using a special construction, the sheets were joined together in such a way that aesthetically pleasing and homogeneous edges were created despite the different material thicknesses. A total of almost 900 kilograms of aluminum and steel were processed.
