Do not disturb my circles

Julie Biron

Summary

At the center of the art installation "Don't disturb my circles" are 100 densely arranged, movable discs made of untreated sheet steel. What initially appears to be a rigid, insurmountable surface is transformed by a slight impulse into something fragile, permeable and alive. This fascinating art installation by Julie Biron invites you to rethink boundaries and enter into a dialog with the space.

Simpel, aber wirkungsvoll: Blumentöpfe dienen als Ständer für die Kunstinstallation „Störe meine Kreise nicht“ von Julie Biron.

Art that surprises with movement and sound

In 2012, Julie Biron won the "Festival des architectures vives" competition in Montpellier, France, with her participatory artwork "Don't disturb my circles". Under the motto "Surprise", her art installation was the only one that actively invited the public to interact. 100 closely packed metal panels form a quiet, motionless backdrop in an exhibition courtyard surrounded by four high walls. Only occasionally does it seem possible to pass through. But as soon as you touch one of the plates attached to rods, the artwork comes to life: The surface begins to oscillate, vibrate and produce delicate sounds. You almost feel as if you are wading through a pond.

Ein Gefühl, wie wenn man durch einen Teich watet. Sobald man die Metallscheiben berührt, beginnt die Oberfläche zu schwingen.

Traces desired: craftsmanship meets transience

For this unusual art installation, Arnold supplied 100 metal discs of different sizes made of 0.5 millimeter thick, untreated sheet steel. The artist's conscious decision to use the raw material allows fingerprints, rust and the effects of the weather to leave their mark. Precise artistic production made it possible: the metal discs were first cut from the sheet steel by laser and then provided with curved edges in a rolling process to protect visitors from sharp edges. Mounted on threaded rods and placed in flower pots filled with concrete, the discs are stable yet flexible. This allows them to move gently when someone walks through - and brings the room to life.
