Broche

Ayse Erkmen

Summary

Arnold AG created the monumental artwork "Broche" by internationally renowned artist Ayşe Erkmen for the city of Ghent. The approximately 20-metre-high work consists of a central stainless steel tube to which 34 highly polished, gold-plated elements are attached. Inspired by medieval window profiles around the Korenmarkt, the work was developed as a contemporary response to the historic Ghent tower series. Arnold AG was responsible for the design, manufacture, transportation and installation - a particular logistical challenge in the narrow old town.

View of the sculpture during acceptance

A golden ribbon in the heart of Ghent

Following the redesign of the Korenmarkt, Ghent gained a new artistic landmark in 2014: Broche. The vertical work of art rises up in the middle of the historical and cultural center of the city, in direct line of sight to the three famous towers and the city hall. With its gleaming golden forms, reminiscent of a chain, Erkmen responds to the architectural history of the location and at the same time makes a powerful contemporary statement.

The 34 gilded elements take up the shapes of medieval windows, abstracting them and making them appear as sparkling links in a chain. Elegant and playful, yet imposing at the same time, "Broche" draws the eye upwards, thus linking past and present.

Art between past and present

Ayşe Erkmen is one of the leading sculptors of her generation. Her works are always created in dialog with the historical and social context in which they are placed. With "Broche", Erkmen shows how respectful treatment of an environment in combination with a clear, legible visual language can open up a new dimension in public space.

A new landmark for the Korenmarkt

The Korenmarkt has been a central hub of the city for centuries - a crossroads of the historic Donkersteeg and the road to Brabant. Here, where history and culture meet, "Broche" now stands as a modern landmark. The work blends harmoniously into the cityscape and at the same time sets a sparkling accent that revitalizes the square and invites visitors to pause for a moment.

20 meters of art through Ghent's alleyways

The realization of "Broche" placed the highest technical demands. The construction, manufacture, transport and installation of the almost 20-metre-high sculpture was carried out by us, under the direction of Frank Lohmann.
The logistical implementation was particularly challenging: the artwork had to be transported in one piece to the narrow, historic old town of Ghent and installed with precision - a task that required experience, technical skill and careful planning.
