Airport Sheremetyevo – Terminal D

Dmitry Pshenichnikov

Summary

For Terminal D at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow, we realized the impressive connecting roof "Main Arch" including pedestrian bridge, canopies and shading system. Our team was responsible for the design, production, logistics and assembly of 1,900 tons of steel and 10,000 m² of aluminium cladding - Arnold AG's largest foreign project to date.

A new terminal, a major challenge

Terminal D, the future hub for international flights, was created with the expansion of Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport. Arnold AG was part of this project and took on the entire steel construction for the new terminal. Our contribution: the connecting roof between the parking garage and the terminal, as well as several canopies and the pedestrian bridge. For us, it was the largest foreign order to date, both in terms of scope and logistics.

The Main Arch - 125 meters span over the bridge

The centerpiece of the project is the "Main Arch". With a span of 125 meters, it spans a 56-meter-long pedestrian bridge and connects the terminal with the multi-storey parking lot. Visually, the bridge looks as if it is hanging from the roof. In fact, it is structurally supported by two outwardly inclined arches. To the left and right are two further roof areas, 100 and 150 meters long, which are part of the uniform canopy system.

Aluminum, steel and precision down to the last detail

Around 1,900 tons of steel were used for the construction. The underside of the Main Arch consists of 3,950 triangular aluminum sheets that incorporate the geometry of the glass surfaces. Each part was unique and had to be positioned precisely to replicate the complex shape of the roof. Our own Arnosol system - made from 13,000 meters of aluminium tubing on powder-coated sheet steel swords - was used to shade the protruding 2,200 m² area.

Logistics at a high level

The production and delivery of the components placed particular demands on the logistics. Over 100 truck journeys brought steel and aluminum to Moscow. Arnold coordinated planning, transportation and assembly - including coordination with partner companies and the general contractor on site. This meant that all 6,000 individual parts could be assembled precisely and on time.

Weather protection meets modern architecture

The tongue-shaped canopies, which protrude up to nine meters from the façade, provide weather protection for arriving passengers and make a design statement. The upper and lower sides of the roofs echo the architectural design language of the terminal and combine technical precision with modern aesthetics. Our contribution shows how sophisticated metal construction and well thought-out design go hand in hand.

With Sheremetyevo, Arnold AG has shown that even complex foreign projects can be implemented reliably. Design, production, logistics and assembly from a single source - the project is an example of how technical precision, coordination and experience lead to a harmonious result.
